Monday, September 24 was a windy day. With the wind blowing fiercely out of the southwest, giant waves made their way straight into the harbor, pushing Scott Smith’s 23-foot Sonar sailboat onto the beach in front of the Lake Superior Trading Post. Smith got a call from the Sheriff’s Office telling him his boat had landed. He found that his 900-pound keel had sheared off where it was bolted to the bottom of the boat. He will be retrieving it from the bottom of the harbor. With temperatures in the 60s, both locals and tourists were walking out toward the lighthouse all day to watch the waves crashing into the breakwall. The wind shifted later in the day, coming out of the northwest, and then died down completely by evening. Pictured here are (L-R) Matthew Brown, Scott Smith, and Emma.
