Rain clouds dispersed and the sun shone down by the end of the afternoon of the Cook County Courthouse 100th anniversary celebration on Friday, September 21, 2012. The courthouse lawn was busy with potato sack races, hot dog eating, and visiting amongst friends and neighbors. County commissioners offered tours of the building, Grand Marais Lions grilled hot dogs, and Girl Scouts handed out ice cream bars. A ceremony was held at 4:00 p.m., followed by burial of a welded-shut time capsule holding documents, photos, future predictions by local school kids, and interesting memorabilia such as a cell phone, a Smokey Bear doll, and a rubber ducky. See page A3 for more on this centennial celebration.
