Spring is here! Thanks to Dennis Chick of Hungry Jack Lake for sharing this beautiful winged splash of color. Local entomologist Dave MacLean identified this as a mourning cloak butterfly, Nymphalis antiopa. He says adults overwinter and emerge on warm spring days. The mourning cloak has one generation each year and can be found throughout most of North America.
