Paul Sundberg of Grand Marais headed out to The Point to take pictures of the interesting ice formations on the breakwall. He found a pleasant surprise, this snowy owl alongside the trail. Sundberg said the bird was so well camouflaged that he would have walked past it had it not turned its head. “The feathers on her back blended right in with the lichens on the rock.” Sundberg said the owl was very tolerant of his presence. He was excited about getting such a close-up look at the owl and noted that its feathers were so thin and fine they look like fur. That is what insulates these owls, which spend most of their time in the Arctic. “I feel very fortunate to be able to walk up on one of our Northland’s most beautiful creatures.”
