The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research vessel Lake Explorer II docked in the Grand Marais Harbor on August 31. The Lake Explorer II made a one-day stop while conducting its comprehensive environmental assessment of coastal conditions in the Great Lakes. It is equipped with multiple instruments that measure temperatures at different depths, the zooplankton density, water quality, sediments and more. The Lake Explorer II is 90 feet long, has a cruising speed of 10 knots and a range of 1,000 nautical miles. It has 11 bunks (four double staterooms and one triple stateroom), and accommodates four crew (boat captain, first mate, chief and first engineers) and up to seven scientists.
