WIC was honored by the Minnesota Department of Health for achieving several U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 breastfeeding goals. Over 94% of Cook County infants in the WIC program are breastfed after birth. Of those babies, 72% are still breastfed at least six months later, and 28% continue to be breastfed for one year or longer. Healthy People 2010 is a set of objectives designed to prevent disease and promote health in America over the first decade of the new millennium. Its goals are to increase quality of life and longevity and eliminate health disparities.
