In June 2009 in McGrath, Alaska, two firefighters, who had not previously met, learned they had a common tie. Cal Maki (left) of Palmer, AK and Paul Beberg of Fairbanks, AK are both former residents of Grand Marais. They met during a “fire bust,” in which they responded to several lightning strike fires. Maki works at the Mat-Su Forestry Office in Palmer and was on assignment as the helicopter manager for N398EH, pictured in the background. He is the son of MN DNR Ranger Bob Maki of Grand Marais. Beberg works in Fairbanks at the State of Alaska Logistics Center and was on assignment as the supervisory dispatcher. He is the son of Chuck and Jan Beberg, also former residents of Grand Marais.
