A Northfield Lines charter bus full of teenagers heading back home to the Twin Cities after being at Cathedral of the Pines Camp had a mishap at the corner of the Caribou Trail and Highway 61 just before 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 2, 2010. The person who notified the Cook County Law Enforcement Center said that the bus had lost its brakes. According to some of the kids on the bus, the bus veered into the stop sign, breaking the front side window. Traffic was very heavy in both directions on Highway 61, and the bus avoided both the highway and the very steep ditch. According to Deputy Sheriff Don Phillips, hydraulic brakes can lose their pressure if they get too hot. As kids were being transferred back to Cathedral of the Pines to wait for a replacement bus, one of the kids called out, “Yay! Now we get to spend another hour at camp!”
