For the last week, North Shore residents have been keeping an eye out for the sight of a Tall Ship as the historic vessels traveled to Duluth for the Tall Ship Festival. Grand Portage National Monument Superintendent Tim Cochrane was visiting Isle Royale National Park and had the fortune of being in the right place at the right time. He was able to board the US Brig Niagara in Rock Harbor, which was sailing past Isle Royale from its homeport of Erie, Pennsylvania. The US Brig Niagara was built in 1988 as the official flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a reconstruction of the brig that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led to victory during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. On shore behind the Niagara is the historic Rock Harbor lighthouse, built in 1855.
