Storm clouds rumbling overhead, Dave Johnson was ready to get this picture of a massive lightning bolt as it jolted from the sky and landed in the Grand Marais harbor. Good thing it didn’t hit one of the sailboats moored in the bay. How hot is a lightning bolt? So hot it can heat the air near it to about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is roughly five times hotter than the surface of the sun.
