Not too many birds in the Northland are as colorful as the adult male purple finch. Males are identified because they have a raspberry red head, breast and back. These birds feed on seeds and soft buds of evergreen trees, tulip poplars, maples, elms, as well as berries and nectar from flowers. The average lifespan is three to four years.
