This bull moose is in velvet, chewing a twig. When bulls first form antlers they are covered in skin called “velvet”, which nourishes the bone as it grows. To shed the velvet, moose often rub their antlers on trees. The Algonquin word for moose was mooswa, which means “Eater of Twigs.”
