When swimming becomes too much, baby loons hop on mom’s back for a ride. Babies are left to their own devices at about 11 weeks. While they can’t fly yet, they’re good swimmers and able to feed themselves. An adult loon can stay under water for up to five minutes and dive to 250 feet. Loons often sleep in the water. When loons gather in a group, they are called by many names including a raft, a cry, a waterdance and an asylum.
