Mamma Loon keeps her baby close. Chicks stay with their parents until they are 11 to 12 weeks old, not old enough to fly but old enough to feed themselves. Loons lay, on average, one to two eggs and hatch one to two chicks. The survival rate isn’t great for baby loons, but if they do make it to adulthood, they have been known to live up to 30 years
