Representative Rick Nolan look out. A Two Harbors native and national security expert is setting out on her Yamaha Vstar to spend 80 days visiting and listening to the residents of Minnesota’s 8th District, taking the pulse of a very large diverse community.
“After nearly a decade in positions throughout the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I no longer felt I was serving my country in the best way possible,” said Leah Phifer on her website. “I left the federal government to explore my role in building a stronger future for the people of my district,” said Phifer. “As I enter my next chapter of public service, I can’t promise to be a typical politician, but I can promise to continue serving the public interest in the best way I know how. I can promise to use my skills and training to gather all the facts and use all resources at my disposal to come to the best solutions possible for the 8th District. By the end of this summer, I hope to find that I’m the best person to represent our diverse interests. Regardless of the outcome,
I promise to be here, working alongside all of you to find the best way forward for our district and our country.”
Phifer will meet with the public in Grand Marais at the Community Center 4-H log building at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24.
Today Phifer lives in Isanti, Minnesota. She is a graduate of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Phifer served the Department of Homeland Security before working in counter terrorism at the FBI. Other potential candidates for Nolan’s seat are Sue Hakes of Grand Marais who announced in May she’s exploring a potential bid for the 8th District and former 8th District contender Stewart Mills, who says he hasn’t ruled out running again. Hakes suspended her bid following Nolan’s decision not to run for governor and instead will try once again to retain his seat.
