Saying she felt blessed, Grand Marais resident Joyce Petek thankfully accepted the $4,000 check from Grand Marais Lion Bob Spry on Monday, August 3.
Petek’s name was picked from the 800 tickets sold for the Sunday, August 2 drawing held in Harbor Park at 5 p.m., the traditional time for the Fisherman’s Picnic drawing.
Seven other people were the lucky winners of grocery gift cards donated by Gene’s Foods, said Spry. Those winners are: $100- Ken Broker; $50- Carah Nelson; $50-Orvis Lunke; $25- Barb Jansen; $25- Elsa Lunde; $25- Steve Docken; $25- Sue Dittus.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the four-day Fisherman’s Picnic festivities were cancelled this year. Had the annual four-day Fisherman’s Picnic been held, it would have been the 91st picnic with only one other cancellation during World War ll.
About 180 pounds of herring were sold at the fish burger stand over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Teaming up to sell fish burgers with the Lions were members of the Cook County Historical Society.
“We wanted to make sure that some tradition of the picnic continued in honor of the origins of the event,” said Executive Director Carrie Johnson, Cook County Historical Society.
Proceeds from the raffle and sales at the fish burger stand will be donated back into the community in the form of grants and gifts to schools and non-profit organizations.
