On January 17 Congressman U.S. Representative Pete Stauber (R-MN) announced he was seeking a third term to represent Minnesota’s Eighth Congregational District in Congress.

In a press release the Congressman said, “After a year of single-party Democrat control of Washington, enough is enough! Together we must stop this insanity, take back Congress, and return our great nation to the bedrock conservative principles that make America great: free enterprise, limited government, border security, and fidelity to the Constitution.”

The former professional hockey player, retired Duluth police lieutenant, small business owner, former St. Louis County Commissioner, and former Hermantown City Councilor is a conservative who routinely locks horns with President Biden’s agenda, from the budget to order at the southern border to mining issues, especially mining as it concerns mining in the region.

“President Biden made a choice to ban mining in my district, putting my constituents’ livelihoods and our national security at risk,” Stauber said on January 13, 2022, during a House Natural Resources Committee Republicans and Congressional Western Caucus joint forum. “Mining in northern Minnesota isn’t just a local issue—it’s an industry with national and international implications. As global demand is growing to meet the needs of technological development, especially with minerals needed for alternative sources of energy, it’s time we start responsibly sourcing them here in the United States instead of relying on foreign, and often hostile, nations for them.”

Stauber has been fighting for the permitting process for the proposed Twin Metal’s mine to continue, but in October 2021, President Biden’s administration asked for a 20-year mineral withdrawal within the Superior National Forest. This move caused a two-year pause on releasing federal mining lease permits in the area.

In November the Congressman voted no on the Biden administration’s multi-trillion tax and spend package. In December 2021, he asked the Forest Service to not cut permits to the Boundary Water Canoe Area, but the Forest Service recently announced they were cutting BWCAW entry permits for 2022 by 13 percent.

Congressman Stauber serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, House Committee on Natural Resources, House Committee on Small Business. He caucuses with the Law Enforcement Caucus, Steel Caucus; Western Caucus; Sportsman Caucus and Problem Solvers Caucus.

So far, only Chisholm democrat Theresa Lastovich has thrown her hat in the ring to run against Stauber.

Stauber first won office in 2018, defeating Democrat Joe Radinovich by more than five percent. That victory made Pete only the second Republican to win office in the 8th District in 72 years. In 2020, Stauber was re-elected after beating DFL challenger Quinn Nystrom by more than 15 points.

During his first two terms Congressman Stauber has been a voice for the mining industry, pro-life, law and order, military, border security, small government, broadband, etc. He calls President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill “nothing more than a wish list for socialist policies that the American people have already rejected. Biden’s bill: doubles the size of the IRS, provides amnesty for illegal immigrants, uses taxpayer funds for abortions and utilizes “Made in America” tax.

“I am running for re-election because northern Minnesota needs a voice in Washington who will continue to champion our causes built on the foundation of our values and beliefs,” Stauber said in his news release. “I am launching my re-election campaign for Congress today because I believe our best days are ahead. Together, let’s defend our way of life, take back our country, and rebuild our future.”

Congressman Stauber lives in Hermantown with his wife Jodi, the former Command Chief Master Sergeant of the 148th Fighter Wing, Minnesota Air National Guard, and their five kids.
