Players from across Minnesota, six other states and Thunder Bay, Canada joined local players last weekend to compete in the four-day Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament on the Grand Marais courts. This was the 38th year for the tournament hosted by the Cook County Tennis Association.
The turnout was strong enough to hold 16 different tennis events ranging from seniors to juniors. Play was very competitive in all events with many matches being determined by a third tiebreak set. The weather was nearly perfect which helped boost the quality of play and also attracted a large number of spectators. Of course the ice cream social on Saturday was a big hit as well. Many of the players commented on the excellent tennis facilities and promised to return again next year.
The Junior events started Friday afternoon. The Boys’ 10 Singles is always fun to watch and this year was no different.
