Perfect conditions for Polar League Conference track and field

Wednesday, May 13 marked the day of the Polar League Conference track and field meet at Barnum High School. It was a perfect day for a race, nice and cool.

Eleven teams competed on the girls’ side. In first place was Cromwell followed by Esko, South Ridge/Northwoods, Two Harbors, Moose Lake Willow River, Carlton, Barnum, Cook County, Silver Bay, McGregor, and Wrenshall.

There were 12 teams competing for the boys. Esko finished in first place and was followed by Moose Lake Willow River, Two Harbors, McGregor, SouthRidge/Northwoods, Cromwell, Wrenshall, Silver Bay, Barnum, Carlton, Cook County and Floodwood.

Lots of improvement for boys

Our boys’ 4×800 team (Leif Anderson, Will Surbaugh, Sean MacDonell, and Roman Schnobrich) kicked off the day with a nice performance and came in 4th place with a time of 9:43.

Both of our milers had new personal best times set. Leif Anderson finished in 10th place with 5:33 and Trent Spry was in 17th with a time of 6:29.

 

 

Sean MacDonell and Will Lamb ran great 400- meter races and finished 8th place in 58.51 and 11th place in 1:00.89 respectively.

Leif Anderson has had much success in the 800 meter run this year, as an 8th grader he finished in 7th place with a time of 2:25.17.

Jack Haussner and Henry DeArruda-Weaver have shown much progress in the event of the 300 hurdles. They finished 16th (1:03) and 17th (1:08) at this meet.

Will Surbaugh improved his 2-mile time by 41 seconds today. He finished in 11th place with a time of 11:58.

Great season for girls

Sophie Eliasen kicked off the day for the girls with a 5th place finish in the 100meter dash in a time of 14:37. True Nies finished in 28th with a time of 17.06.

Molly Thomas finished in 3rd place in the 400- meter dash with a time of 1:06.

Sarah Toftey and Maya McHugh worked well together in the 800 meter dash. They pushed and pulled one another. They finished 16th (2:56) and 17th (2:56).

Eliasen came back in the 200-meter dash and ran a 29.04 and finished in 3rd place. She really pushed it hard and used every last meter to beat out the competition.

Molly Thomas came in 9th place with a time of 30.26 and Chloe Blackburn was in 29th with a time of 39.36.

Matea Acero has had a great season; she ran the 3200meter run and she finished in 3rd place with a time of 12:49.

Emily Jacobsen finished in 7th place with a shot put throw of 28-04, Claire Sherburne finished 11th with a throw of 25-07.50, and Alicia Smith finished 27th with a throw of 21-02.50.

Alicia Smith had a big improvement in the discus throw. She threw 71-01 and came in 13th.

Lucy Callender had big improvements in all of her events; she threw 48-07 in the discus, she jumped 9-03 in the long jump, and she jumped 22-05.50 in the triple jump. The meet ended with a beautiful performance (with great handoffs) by our girls’ 4×400 team (Sophie Eliasen, Molly Thomas, Emily Jacobsen, and Sarah Toftey). They finished in 4th place with a time of 4:41.

Our next week will be Sub-Sections, which will be the last meet for most of our young team. This will take place on Wednesday, May 20 at UMD. A few will advance to the Section meet, which will be at UMD on Thursday, May 28.
