Peggy Backlund-Ortega Memorial

On Monday, October 10, five lifelong friends gathered at Devil’s Track Lake to celebrate the life of Peggy Backlund, born December 15, 1954 to Wesley and Ruth Backlund. Peggy left Grand Marais for Hawaii, where she met Carol and Debbie. A few years later she went to work for the U.S. Embassy and was posted in Greece, Hungary, Ecuador, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Washington D.C. Carol and Debbie visited Peggy in most of the places she worked. While in Mexico City, Peggy met and married Juan-Carlos, the love of her life.

Peggy passed away on December 8, 2020, but because of COVID her distant friends were not able to travel until now. Peggy always spoke of her home in Grand Marias and her family’s cabin on Wesley Lane, named after her father, so it was the perfect place to say goodbye to our dear friend. We will always remember Peggy’s kindness, love and laughter.

Peggy is survived by her husband and sisters Kaye Backlund, Maralee Park and Lori Sundman as well as other relatives in Grand Marais.
