“Pedal to the metal” for new records at Lutsen 99er

With sunny skies, clear trails, and temperatures that didn’t exceed 75 degrees, some 1,500 mountain bikers had a glorious day to compete in one of three races held at Lutsen Mountains on June 27. So glorious in fact that records were broken in all three races.

Winning the 99-mile race was Steve Tilford in 5:3644. Tilford took 16 minutes off the previous record held by Bryson Perry.

The first woman across the line was Ally Stacher in 6:10:07. Ally placed 14th overall and took a staggering 1 hour 3 minutes off the former mark held by Rebecca Stauber.

Jim Joynes led all local finishers in the 99er with a time of 6:33:25 to place 30th overall. Shanie Hahn was the top female with a time of 7:18:03. Shanie placed second in the 40-44 age group.

Jayden Corliss of Lutsen and Sam Hedstrom of Grand Marais placed 339 and 340 with Corliss recording a time of 8:50:16 and Hedstrom one second behind. Charlie Corliss of Lutsen placed 460 in 10:36:44.

39er results

Joshua Gillingham placed first in the 39er race with a time of 2:14:48. He took 12 minutes off the previous mark held by Patrick Sheedy. Sara Morse finished with a time of 2:30:20, eight minutes faster than April Morgan’s record time.

Philip Larson of Grand Marais was the top local finisher, placing 13th with a time of 2:25:57.

Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux was 39th in 2:34:13 but finished first in the Fat Bike division.

John Alt placed 40th in 2:35:23. Tom Rider finished 78th in 2:46:03 while his daughter, Molly Rider was just behind him in 88th place. John Trettle placed 105 in 2:48:48 and Jim Elverhoy was 147th in 2:53:36. Beau Larson finished 157th in 2:55:28 while Mica Mellang placed 164th in 2:6:28. Will Surbaugh crossed in 172nd in 2:57:37 and Kelly Twiest finished 239th in 3:09:25.

Joshua Doolittle won the 19-miler race in a record-breaking time of 1:03:26. Doolittle was 8 minutes under the record held by Robert Wharton. Sara Vipond lowered the mark held by Jennifer Nowinn by 9 minutes with a time of 1:15:34.

Henry DeArruda-Weaver placed 37th in 1:25:53 to lead local riders. Mary Manning placed 56 in 1:30:08. Martina Summer placed 77 in 1:39:29 with Lynseybeth Quarles placing 111th in 1:53:12. Katherine Payer finished in 123rd place in 2:00:04 with Mlade Gajic in 124th with a time of 2:00:44.
