Pearl Ruth Schlienz

Pearl Ruth Schlienz gained her angel wings on June 8, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Pearl was 98 years young.

Pearl was born on September 19, 1924, to Mabel (Sylvester) and Sidney Drowley in St Charles, Michigan. Pearls early years were spent traveling around Michigan as her father owned and operated a sawmill which meant the family went where the timber was, which is also what brought them to Grand Marais, Minnesota in 1948. Although she raised five children, she also worked 18 years at El Rays (Blue Water Café) and 33 years at the Cook County Care Center, where she made lifelong friendships. Pearl worked up to the age of 83, before she fully retired.

Pearl was talented and adventurous in many aspects of her life. She was a master of woodwork, an avid hobbyist in many different mediums. When Pearl wasn’t working or immersed in her art projects, she could be found scrapbooking, making special treats for her family (every Thanksgiving she would make up to 20 pumpkin pies so each family could take one home with them), traveling and gardening and was a collector of hundreds of movies. She was never without a dog or two and loved birds. But most of all she was an amazing mother and grandmother. Not a day went by where Pearl didn’t talk about how much her children and family meant to her — her family was arguably her most important achievement in life.

She was proceeded in death, by her parents, husband Wayne Schlienz, brothers Ray (Kathy) Drowley, Kenneth (Maria) Drowley and Don (Inez) Drowley, sister Ethel (Oni) Allen, and her eldest grandson Daniel Schlienz, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her sister Marion (Pete) Burge, her five children Gary Schlienz (Mandy) and Ronald Schlienz (Dorothy), Arloa Holaday, Darleen Irving and Debra Backstrom. Eleven grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Those of us who were blessed to be touched by her, understand the imprint she left on our hearts will be stamped there for all eternity.
