Peaceful protest interrupted by rude intruders

To Cook County local residents and visitors,

I am a resident of Cook County. On Friday, September 18, I took part in a peaceful demonstration as part of a social justice group looking for justice for people of color and honoring and remembering the loss of black citizens at the hands of police. It is a quiet, non-partisan gathering of people, wearing masks, with signs along Highway 61. We wave at cars that honk in support.

This time, I and three others were accused of re-writing history; of not loving our country because we didn’t have flags; told to leave the country and live somewhere else; and that we didn’t know what we were about. This was yelled at us, up close, by a white male not wearing a mask and his friends nodding in agreement. They didn’t stay long enough to engage in a conversation or listen to what we tried to say.

The Trump supporters have chosen this time and place to have their rally. Black Lives Matter is not political. We don’t have Biden/Harris signs. We don’t have blue flags. We just want equal rights for people of color that have been denied them for hundreds of years. It looks as though the Trump supporters don’t support these ideals. If they believe in human dignity and rights of ALL peoples, then they should leave their Trump flags and Trump signs at home and join us. Save the Trump demonstration for Saturday evening.

Thank you for your time.
Kathy Sullivan
