Moose: Life of a Twig Eater will air at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 on WDSE/PBS.
The show includes two segments filmed in Grand Portage along with segments shot in Jasper National Park. The program features the work of moose expert Dr. Seth Moore, producer/director Susan Fleming and cameraman and naturalist Hugo Kitching, who spent a year following the moose calf and its mother.
The nature film, a first-person account by the cameraman, chronicles his year documenting the life of a moose calf and its mother to understand what it takes to survive; moose populations are declining at a rapid rate in the Canadian Rockies, Minnesota and in the boreal forests of North America in general.
In the film, Moore notes the difficulty young calves are having surviving the first year due to predation as well as the poor health of the mother cows. He and a colleague are shown collaring a calf. Moore also addresses the different reasons for the moose population decline based on their field work and research.
