A number of Cook County High School students are among the scholars selected for an exhibition at the Kruk Gallery, Holden Fine Arts Center, University of Wisconsin- Superior. They were among the 103 best submissions in the 2010 WDSE-TV PBS-8 12th annual high school art contest. The contest theme this year was What
Inspires You?

Junior Will Brandenburg won first place in the essay contest with his essay The Power of Music.
As first place winner, Will had his essay displayed at Kruk Gallery and received a $500 prize. Senior Karlee Axtell also won commendation as a finalist.

Art contest finalists were also on display at Kruk Gallery and among them from CCHS was Haley Ruhanen; Grace Nelson with a water color and charcoal piece entitled Guarding
Childhood Dreams;
Danny Lunde with an interesting montage; Will Hellner with Portal
Through Clouds,
a vibrant oil painting; and Sophie Holz with A Man of Science and
Art,
a black and white acrylic of Albert Einstein, a thoughtful portrait of the wise scientist who said art was more important than knowledge.

Also selected as a finalist was Katie LeGarde with her acrylic paint and paper rendering of pines in winter. She captures the quiet simplicity of nature in Winter
Wonderland.

Karla Hall’s Leaf in the Wild,
a turbulent creation of colored pencils and pens that started with a “leaf caught in a mess of colors,” was also a finalist.

Finalist Ashley Green had perhaps the most unique entry, with her bold fashion statement—a dress made entirely out of duct tape. Ashley declared, “Fashion inspires me a lot! Being a designer is one of my dreams…I wanted my work to be different from everyone else’s.”

Will Hellner was also among the finalists in the PBS-8 photo contest with his beautiful Lake Superior shoreline photo entitled Natural
Inspiration.

The CCHS students were among 818 scholars from 19 area high schools who submitted essays, and students from 20 area high schools who submitted 360 works of art and photography in this year’s contest.

The PBS-8 art finalists all have their work on display in the lobby of the Arrowhead Center for the Arts for another couple of weeks.
