A key single by Tate Crawford in the first inning brought in one run, and that was all the Vikings needed in a game that featured strong pitching and great defense.
The Vikings hosted the North Woods Grizzlies on Thursday, May 13, on a nice night for baseball with the temperatures in the low 60’s and no wind.
Paul Dorr took the mound for the Vikings, and the righty threw seven strong innings, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out three as he shut out the North Woods Grizzlies.
Kruse pitched a strong game for the Grizzlies. He allowed three hits, one run and struck out two Viking batters over six innings. The Northwoods pitcher also led his team in hitting by going 2-3 from the plate.
The Vikings committed three errors while the Grizzlies had two.
Both teams made excellent fielding plays. The Vikings had a double play in the first inning that killed what could have been a rally, and in the sixth inning, they ran down a player trying to steal second for the second out.
In the seventh inning, Seidel singled and Hunter Gomez walked. Tate Crawford laid out a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved the runners to second and third. Patrick Pierre was safe on first on an error, and with one out and the bases loaded, it seemed like the Vikings were going to score some runs. However, a pop-up to the short right was caught, and the Grizzlie shortstop made a great scoop and threw to first to get the final out.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Grizzlies first batter singled. The Viking’s second baseman made a great catch on the next play and two outs later, the game was over on routine plays.
The score remained 1-0, just enough to keep the victory for the Vikings in a well-played game by both teams.
