Pastor Roland A. Saethre was born Jan. 9, 1921 in Grand Marais to Alfred and Mabel (Berglund) Saethre and died July 28, 2015 at the Senior Class Care Center in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota at the age of 94.
He graduated from Grand Marais High School as valedictorian in 1939, from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1943 and Luther Seminary, St. Paul in 1945 and was ordained at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais.
He faithfully served parishes at Circle, Montana; Milford, Iowa; and Oklee, Comstock, Finland, Hibbing, and Moorhead, all in Minnesota.
Roland married Bernice Sorestad on April 24, 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 -1958, then in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1986 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Roland is survived by his children Rev. John (Debby) Saethre, Renee (David) Anderson, Margaret (Louis) Iverson, Tom Saethre, Naomi (Randy) Kennicutt; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Eleanor, Irene and Lorraine; and brothers Dale, Chester and Roy.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice and siblings Olive, Lyle, Carolyn and Russell.
Services were held Aug. 1 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Pastor Donna Olsen officiating. Roland was laid to rest in Our Savior’s Cemetery in Pequot Lakes.
