If you woke up before dawn to watch the most recent Royal Wedding or applauded when The King’s Speech won the Oscar, you don’t want to miss the next Cook County Higher Education guest lecture, featuring Dr. Karen Halbersleben, who will present The British Monarchy: Past, Present, and Future on Wednesday, September 14 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the North Shore Campus in Grand Marais.

Come learn how the British monarchy has endured for almost 1,000 years and why the queen is one of the few viable sovereigns left in the world today. How has the role of monarch changed over the centuries, and what real power does the British king or queen exert in modern times? We’ll also leave the realm of history for a bit to conjecture what might happen to the monarchy when the incumbent ends her long and distinguished rule. Is Britain (or the world) ready for a King Charles III or a Queen Camilla?

Karen Halbersleben holds a Ph.D. in British history from the University of Buffalo. She was a professor of European history in the State University of New York system and published research in Victorian social reform movements, notably the British antislavery movement. After holding a fellowship from the American Council on Education, Halbersleben moved into academic administration, including serving as the vice president for academic administration at Buena Vista University in Iowa and president of Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin from 2002- 2009. Following her retirement from Northland, she and her husband Jack Miller retired happily on Devil Track Lake and are proud to call Grand Marais home.

The guest lecture series of Cook County Higher Education is offered to the community free, although donations are welcome.
