The golf course is up and running, although right now it’s not particularly pretty, reported Gunflint Hills golf course supervisor Mike Kunshier to the park board on Tuesday, June 5.
Last winter was hard on the course, but by July 1 the golf course should be up to snuff, added Kunshier.
Camper/boater concerns
Two gentlemen from the park came before the board and requested that the old boat launch ramp in the marina be repaired so small boats could use it. “All it would need is half a load of gravel and we would be home free,” said one of the men.
Two storms last year caused heavy erosion and made the ramp unusable. Last month the park board voted to close the ramp and reestablish it as a small dock area for boats.
No action was taken on the request because park manager Dave Tersteeg couldn’t be at the meeting. The matter will be addressed at the board’s next meeting, said board chair Sally Berg.
Two special event applications submitted by the American Legion Post 413 to use Boulder Park in July and August were approved by the board. Final approval for the permits must be granted by the Grand Marais city council.
The first request was to set up a beer garden in the open space at Boulder Park on the Fourth of July through July 7. The beer garden will open at noon and run until 1 a.m.
Kaye Tavernier was the only board member to vote against the request. Tavernier wasn’t in favor of the beer garden being open so many hours of the day and worried that this decision could send the wrong message to visitors in the area about the city being “family friendly.”
The beer garden will open during the Fisherman’s Picnic August 2 through August 5, tentatively, with the same hours. The hours may be adjusted based on the results of the trial period over the Fourth of July.
Grandma Ray’s LLC will provide the liquor license and insurance requirements.
Bonding
With the good news that the 2018 bonding bill signed by Gov. Dayton included $2 million for the city’s parkside public water access, the park board can now plan for the project with the Minnesota DNR.
“At this point it is premature to suggest a potential redevelopment schedule – given the nature of the project, permits required etc. The initial stage to move us forward should be a ‘kick-off’ meeting of sorts to get us back on track,” said Kent Skaar, the DNR project manager to the park board in an email.
Tree planting
A tree-planting clinic was scheduled for Tuesday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the park’s Great Lakes Initiative grant to plant trees in the coastal zone. The meeting was held at the Rec Park hall with Dr. Gary Johnson leading instruction with a break for lunch and then tree planting.
