On Wednesday, Feb. 24, local and guest artists began painting in the first Grand Marais Art Colony winter outdoor painting event. Yes, winter. Bundled painters are dispersed along the Gunflint Trail capturing the still winter beauty of the north woods. Frozen waterfalls, snow-capped pines, and blanketed lakes are being brushed on canvas as artists brave the cold during the Winter Plein Air Painting Festival.

Curious to know more about how they do it? Join the artists for the opening of their exhibit on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Gunflint Lodge and view these hot-off-the-brush, local winter landscapes. Find out how these painters keep their fingers warm as they add intricate detail to their scenes with finesse. Inquire about secret painting locations. Take a stab at where the artist warms tubes of paint. Refreshments will be served and all paintings will be available for purchase. The exhibit will continue at the Gunflint Lodge on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. before relocating to the Grand Marais Art Colony to exhibit for the month of March.
