Owning slaves does not seem to conform with the concept of virtue

Mr. Gamble heaps praise on our founding fathers as men of virtue and religion conveniently ignoring the fact that many were slave owners. That is not an issue that appears to trouble him. Forcing a fellow human being into a lifetime of involuntary servitude – transforming that person into a commodity to be bought and sold does not seem to fit within the more generally accepted definitions of virtue.

He goes on to attribute to a slave owner a belief that morality cannot be maintained without religion. One can assume that it is a belief he shares and implies that he believes himself incapable of discerning right from wrong without religious assistance. Rather sad if true. Or is it just us, the great unwashed that he believes needs his religion to attain his sense of morality and virtue?

He goes on to lament that there are no longer any “black and white” moral absolutes that apparently were so abundant during slave owning times. Surely the News-Herald can find someone to write a column not containing such absurdities.
