Cook County Higher Education will offer an outdoor emergency care program beginning Sept. 30 at the North Shore Campus in Grand Marais. The program is the National Ski Patrol’s award-winning training program for patrollers and others in the recreation community who deal with emergency situations.

This 100-hour course prepares students for the Outdoor Emergency Care Technician certification exam and for employment as patrollers and other outdoor-based emergency care providers.

Instructor Mark Abrahamson (with the help of additional patrollers) will teach a combination of online lectures and onsite skills development. The class will meet for six Friday evening/Saturday sessions to build on the online course content and to learn various competencies including scene safety, rapid assessment, arrangement for rapid transport and stabilization of acute injuries. The course runs from Sept. 30 until Jan. 7, 2012.

Instructor Mark Abrahamson has been with the National Ski Patrol since 1985. He is an adjunct instructor for several Minnesota community colleges and has earned a master’s degree in nursing from the College of St. Scholastica.

There is no course fee, however students will need to purchase their books at a cost of $70. In addition, they will need to pay $60 for their certification exam at the end of the course. Cook County Higher Education received funding from North Shore Health Care Foundation for the course.
