A little research into New Year’s resolutions finds that it is not really clear when the tradition of committing to reforming a habit or changing a lifestyle began. Some believe the tradition was started in early Rome in 153 B.C. when a portrayal of a mythical king, Janus, was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on the past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions.

That makes sense, but it appears that the tradition has fallen out of favor. Few of us at the Cook County News-Herald
are making resolutions. We stopped a few folks at press time and asked them:
