Caleb White, youth worker at the Evangelical Free Church and Jamie Ryan, youth worker for Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, took 20 high school students to the Twin Cities in August. One of their mission projects was to work at the packing site of Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). These youths came back to Grand Marais excited and began working on plans to bring this mission project to the people of Cook County and beyond. They started their fundraising five weeks ago and it continued last weekend with a grilling competition at Cook County High School.

Gary Zinter, one of the organizers for the project said, “Theywill need your help and support to make this project happen.”

Thegoal is to bag 300,000 meals, said Zinter. The hope is to raise $57,000 to purchase the food to package 300,000 bags.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will match the first $10,000 that comes in by Dec. 15. The second part of the project is to gather 500 volunteers to work at each location. Three dates have been set next year for the local effort in Two Harbors, Grand Marais and Duluth.

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), founded in 1987 is a non-profit 501(c)(3) Christian organization committed to “feeding God’s starving children, hungry in body and spirit.” FMSC has several permanent packing sites and five mobile pack units, or semis, which are able to bring the meal bagging experience to different communities. FMSC is headquartered in Coon Rapids, MN. In 2009, FMSC produced 96 million meals with more than 416,000 volunteers.

Nearly 18,000 children die each day from starvation or starvation-related causes. Zinter said, “As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, won’t you make a pledge of 19 cents per meal or more until the North Shore/Duluth reaches its goal of $57,000?”

If you wish to support local youths in this goal, send donations to: FMSC, 401 93rd Ave. NW, Coon Rapids MN 55433 or contribute on-line at: fmsc.org/mobilepack/donate.
