Opportunities await for those who want to try out for Fall plays

The Grand Marais Playhouse is jumping into fall with after school programing, a Halloween play and joining a global musical event celebrating local theater. There are many opportunities for community members of any age to get involved!

The After-school programing begins September 20 and runs through November 18. This year, instead of gathering a large cast to perform in the annual kids show, the Playhouse is dividing the play into a series of short plays that will be worked on in smaller groups one day each week. Mondays will be for kids in grades 3-5. This group will work on two plays about bears. On Tuesdays a group of actors in grades 5-8 will produce an Agatha Christie murder mystery play. Wednesdays are all about technical theater. Folks in grades 6- 12 will work on all things technical for the Halloween play and the kids plays. On Thursdays participants in grades 3-8 will perform a variety of poems about winter and learn more about performance poetry.

The classes will result in a public performance of each group’s production November 19-21.

The Playhouse will produce a Halloween play with performers age high school to adult that will send a chill through you as well as make you laugh! The play is The Edgar Allen Poe Afterlife Radio Show by Patrick Greene and Jason Pizzarello. You can read the play for free at www.playscripts.com/play/4783. The play will be performed on stage as an old-time radio show, with live foley sound effects as well as some stage theatrics!

5+ actors are needed. Auditions will be September 20, 6:30 – 8:30. You can register for a time slot at grandmaraisplayhouse.com. People who want to audition should be prepared to read a 1-minute poem or short story demonstrating expressive ability. No experience necessary!

Rehearsals will be Monday – Thursday, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. (negotiable as a cast). Performances are October 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. and Halloween day at 2 p.m.!

Do you like to sing Broadway? In November the Playhouse will be participating in a global event celebrating local theater. All Together Now is Music Theater International’s (MTI) fundraising show for local theaters to produce and perform an exclusive musical revue featuring songs from MTI’s beloved shows.

We need performers to sing solo, in small ensembles as well as a couple large show stopping community numbers including “Supercalifragilistic expialidocious” from the musical Mary Poppins and “You Can’t Stop The Beat” from the Musical Hairspray. We hope to pull a children’s chorus together to sing “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen. A complete list of songs can be found at www.grandmaraisplayhouse.com/ all-together-now along with a link to the sign-up form. This event cannot happen without you!

Please contact the Playhouse if you are interested in participating. Help the Playhouse raise necessary funds while having a fantastic time doing it! The performance will be November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Rehearsals will be organized by group with one group rehearsal onstage before the event.

The Grand Marais Playhouse will be celebrating 50 seasons of community theater in 2022 and plans are underway for a fantastic season. The Playhouse is holding a design contest for a logo for the celebration. The logo should incorporate the mission and vision of the Playhouse as a community building. The logo should not include the year or any timestamp other than possibly its originating date of 1971. For more information, contact the Playhouse. Logo submissions are due October 31, 2021.
