Cook County News Herald

Opinions are opinions

In a recent issue, in Unorganized Territory, editor Rhonda Silence courageously discussed feedback which was extremely critical of the column. Briefly, this focused on the wasted space and better opportunity to provide more news. Feedback is important, and opinions are opinions. And I would like to express unequivocal support for Unorganized Territory.

First I reject the notion that “more news” is needed. The News-Herald is a weekly community paper. In today’s fast-paced world, this is not the best source for timely local news coverage. Internet, WTIP radio, meeting minutes and discussions with people involved are more useful and timely. A few incremental column inches of information that happened on Monday and arrives in the mailbox on Saturday is not breaking news.

Next, as a community paper, the News-Herald provides a wellrounded look at activity in Cook County. Unorganized Territory is about ordinary people like you and me, going about their ordinary lives. We read about the seasons, the weather, animal sightings, kids, school, vacations, local events, and occasional opinions.

As long-term subscribers to the News Herald, although not always residents of Cook County, we got to know Chuck, the kids and the grandkids without ever meeting them. We read about their lives, growing up, vacations and more. The tales represent the fabric of the community and convey a sense of what it is like to live in one of the best places in the USA. Hey, isn’t this what Garrison Keillor writes about?

If we believe that the News- Herald exists to provide news and entertainment, then Rhonda keeps good company indeed.

Here is my routine upon receiving the News-Herald. Scan headline articles on page one. Flip to page 2, read Unorganized Territory and letters to the editor. On to Law Enforcement Briefs noting stats on how many hapless Canadians have been caught speeding, and complaints filed about barking dogs in the past week.

Then to Conservation Officer Tales for a humorous treat of stories about some of the most clueless people on the planet. Refill coffee cup. With calendar and pen in hand, read the remainder of the paper, hopefully listing all the things to do versus time available in the upcoming weeks.

All organizations, including the News-Herald, should research audience response to their products and services. The goal is to provide a wide variety of sections that appeal to different segments of the readership. This is an invitation to all lovers of Unorganized Territory to speak up and be counted.
