David Jansen of Grand Marais recently took on a big cleanup job single-handed.

The day after a car was hoisted out of the Poplar River at the Highway 61 bridge, a local couple biking the Gitchi Gami Trail found David scrambling up the steep slope with a load of trash. Since the accident two months ago that sent the car plunging into the river and the RV that pulled it bursting into flames, debris from the wreck has been strewn everywhere down into the gorge.

David sorted a terrible mess of twisted metal, melted plastic, shredded fiberglass and broken glass into piles, trash cans and buckets for transport to the recycling/dump site. He said he just wanted to clean it up before any more of it washed down into the river and planned on paying for his dump trips out of his own pocket.

While traffic streamed by on Highway 61 and golfers enjoyed the perfect fall day just up the hill, he navigated the incredibly steep slope with his buckets and laboriously got the assorted debris up to his car.
