Well, Vikings fans, there’s really no way to sugar coat the 52-8 loss suffered by the Vikings at the hands of the Ogilvie Lions at Lyle Anderson Field, on Friday, September 18. It was a loss the likes of which hasn’t been witnessed or experienced by Vikings players and fans at Cook County High School for a long time.
After the game the question on many fans minds was, “When was the last time you saw a score like that at Cook County?” (Stay tuned for the answer.)
The (2-1) Lions dominated the Vikings behind an offense that featured a rushing attack lead by senior running back Michael Anderson who ran for over 150 yards and four touchdowns and senior quarterback Thomas Sullivan who also scored a touchdown.
Defensively the Lions stymied a sputtering Vikings offense
except for one big scoring play.
That highlight-reel play for the Vikings came in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Kale Boomer hooked up with sophomore tight end Dylan Quaife on a 65-yard pass for a touchdown. The two-point conversion came after a mishandled snap on a point-after kick attempt that Brock Hommerding picked up and ran into the end zone.
The Vikings’ touchdown made the score 14-8, but from that point on the Lions scored 38 unanswered points and held a 44-8 lead after three quarters, thus bringing the mercy rule into effect which allowed the game to end under running time.
Viking Head Coach Mitch Dorr said of the game, “We didn’t play very well. They beat us in every phase of the game. They were bigger and stronger than us and we got pushed around pretty good. It’s back to square one. We need to get into the weight room.”
Now to answer the question, “When was the last time you saw a score like that at Cook County?”
There have been losses like this in the past that Vikings teams have suffered, but not for quite awhile. However, for more than a decade there have been plenty of games in which the visiting team lost by a lopsided score. In fact, in a strange twist of fate, the last team to do so was these very same Ogilvie Lions last year, when they lost 61-0 at Lyle Anderson Field during the playoffs.
In that game senior quarterback Miles Drake set a Vikings single game rushing record of 364 yards on 19 carries, scored six touchdowns and accounted for over 60% of the Vikings offense. He had four TD runs that went for 47, 66, 70 and 88 yards, prompting this reporter to write of the experience…See Miles run! Run Miles run! And WOW! There he goes again!
Running back Kipp Sande, who has been out with an injury this season and is sorely missed by this Vikings offense, ran for 169 yards on 14 carries in that game against Ogilvie. He scored three touchdowns of 13, 30 and 76-yards.
The memory of that game was on Ogilvie Head Coach Dave Halvorson’s mind when he traveled to Cook County this year. He said, “Last year we tried to make the trip up an outing and stopped at Gooseberry, but that didn’t seem to work too well, so this year we changed strategy and stopped only once for a bathroom break. We tried to keep the guys focused, on football and it seemed to work.
He said, “Anderson had a terrific game, the defense played well and it sure made the ride home a lot nicer. Last year it seemed like it took 20 hours to get home!”
