Have you thought about going to college, but don’t know where to start? College Knowledge Month is a great opportunity to learn more about your options for education and training.
Throughout October you can attend free workshops on how to choose a college, how to pay for college and how to prepare for college. Additional workshops include Starting Your Own Business and Landing the Perfect Job. All events are free of charge and will be held at Cook County Higher Education’s North Shore Campus in Grand Marais: The schedule for Mondays is: . How to Pay for College, Oct. 6, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Learn about financing options including free federal financial aid, college scholarships and local scholarship opportunities. Guests will include Joan Gardner-Goodno from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. . Destination College 2015, Oct. 13, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Learn how to find college programs that meet your needs, the application process, testing and more. . How to Start a Business, Oct. 20, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Learn what it takes to start a business of your own, the elements of a business plan, marketing ideas and financing options. Presented by Pat Campanaro, Small Business Consultant from the UMD Center for Economic Development. . Landing the Perfect Job, Oct. 27, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This workshop will cover the job search process, how to put together an effective resume and cover letter, and help you anticipate job interview questions.

. College Bound Underground Network, Oct. 7-28, 6:30 – 9 p.m. Bring a friend, talk about your past schooling experience, and share your concerns about going back to school. Hosted by Bob Pratt.
Wednesdays will focus on:
. Career Cafes, Oct. 1-29, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Bring a bag lunch and learn from people working in the field about what their job is like, what types of training you will need and what the job outlook for the future is.
On Thursdays:
. Become an Academic Warrior, Oct. 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Good study skills are key to any successful student. At this workshop instructor Pratt will emphasize memory and reading and how certain strategies lead to improved retention and retrieval. . How to Succeed at Math, Oct. 16, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Overcome your fear of taking a college math course by learning simple math tips, problem solving techniques and the process of building up to a college level math course. Instructor Jean Marie Modl will also answer questions and demonstrate solving common math and pre-algebra problems. . Writing the Successful College Paper, Oct. 23, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Whether writing for psychology, history or college English, every successful college paper contains specific elements. Instructor Erin Altemus will cover these elements and more, as she takes you through the process of writing a college level paper.
