Mark your calendar for the North Shore Association’s annual October silent auction and concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. This year’s event on Oct. 8 will feature an array of unique, highquality auction treasures donated by local businesses, followed by a performance of the piano and dance piece Sophie, by Amsterdam residents Brook Cuden and Andreas Denk.

As the curtain opens on Sophie, we see a workshop where a Russian carpenter, dedicated to liquor, works. Shelves, bottles, and filled glasses are everywhere. The carpenter, in an unstable balance, dances to the works of Leonid Fedorov and Wiebe Gotink and music from the films of Mastroani. Live piano music then enters the piece: Brook Cuden performing the works of Rachmaninoff, Mahler and Brahms, and Denk incorporating the works into his movements so piano and dance merge into one. The auction begins at 6 p.m., and the performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 students, available in advance at www.tix.com or at the door.

Cuden and Denk will also lead workshops on Oct. 6 and 7. The workshops have been adapted to include as many students as possible, and participants do not need any prior dance or musical experience.

The workshops are for high school students (ages approximately 13 to 18). Each will last approximately two hours. Students will give a short presentation at the end of each workshop.

Denk has worked as one of the artistic leaders of the Hans Hof Ensemble for 12 years. He is a master in integrating contemporary objects in ‘dansante frases.’ American pianist Brook Cuden has performed as both a solo and collaborative artist throughout the United States and Europe. As a soloist, Cuden has performed in Greece, the United States, and Holland, giving premiere performances by composers such as Jacob ter Veldhuis and Evangelia Kikou. She currently teaches in her private piano studio in Amsterdam.
