September was a busy month for the residents at the Care Center. We took advantage of the beautiful fall weather spending time on the patio, knowing that cooler weather is right around the corner. We are also planning a fall leaf trip on the Arrowhead bus to enjoy some spectacular fall colors before they disappear. On September 20, we honored our three centenarians with a cake and ice cream social. Congratulations to Lu Pettijohn, Ethel Leng, and Phyllis Noyes!
October is here with a lot of fun activities all month. The residents will be busy with craft projects for our annual holiday craft sale to be held in November. As the weather cools, we will be sharing recipes and doing some fun fall baking too. We will be making pretzels for Oktoberfest, and some “hoot owls” for a fun Halloween treat!
The monthly birthday party will be held on October 12 at 3 p.m. to honor Ophelia Bassett. There will be plenty of cake and ice cream along with favorite piano tunes by Doug Sanders.
The Lioness will host their monthly social on October 15 at 3 p.m. The residents want to extend a special thank you to these wonderful ladies. We always look forward to the special desserts they provide for this event! We also want to thank Irene Thompson for her lovely piano music that accompanies the Lioness Social.
Two outings are planned for October. On October 19, we will visit the Plein Air Exhibit which is on display at the Johnson Heritage Post. If the weather permits, we’ll take a stroll in Harbor Park too. We will also be going to the Senior Center on October 27 for a delicious lunch and to visit with our friends there.
We will be having two special music events this month. Music with Marco will be held on Saturday October 1 at 2:30 p.m. Marco Good will be playing some wonderful tunes for an afternoon of sing along fun. On October 28 at 2:30 p.m., Mary and Jim Schliep will bring their festive accordion music to the Care Center for our Oktoberfest celebration.
October is also Country Music Month and we look forward to the classic country music that the band Portage will perform on Saturday, October 29 at 6:30 p.m. We always enjoy their visit, and the wonderful music they bring to us each month. We invite family, friends, and community members to join us in the fun!
Other live music this month will feature old country and gospel with Al Fuller on Mondays, and classic piano music with Susan Scherer on Wednesday nights.
On October 31 at 2:30, Hilja will host a “Halloween Happy Hour” for the residents. Later that evening, the elders will be passing out treats to the little ones.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center, courtesy of Activities Director Belinda Hudler.
