My sister and I just left our little breakfast spot. As we ate and sipped our coffees, the conversation about the proposed community center began. Every single patron in the place talked of the frustration with the commissioner(s) and how the taxpayers’ voices don’t seem to matter at all.
I think its clear that 90% of the people who live here have said no to this financial disaster but still they continue like our opinion matters not.
We agreed that the mayor and city council need to hang tough and fight the county on this issue. We agreed on the facts that the steering committee should build their own country club and finance it as well. We agreed and acknowledged that the demand for our local food shelf is huge and makes up at least 100 of the voters who will never be able to use such a facility.
We agreed that in these times of raised taxes and uncertain economy that all we want is the current pool to be rebuilt. We agreed that almost a half million dollars of the 1% tax has already been spent on consultants for this project. We agreed that the pool could almost be completed with that amount of money now lost.
We agreed that some day the working class will be gone from this town as none of us will be able to afford to live here and that many have left already, particularly young families. We agreed that it is we who vote and remember to do so when a seat comes up for re-election.
We agreed to OCCUPY GRAND MARAIS! Let’s plan an evening to bundle up and take to the streets. Let’s do it. Keep the opposition alive or forever hold your tongue. Call me and leave a message of support and we will figure out a date and time that works!
