What a great turnout for the groundbreaking for the North Shore Hospital and Care Center renovation! But, as I scanned the line-up of shovelers, I noticed a glaring absence: no nurses.
Where is the nurse who was called to ride the ambulance to Duluth in the middle of the night with a cardiac patient? Where is the nurse who performed CPR for 30 minutes on a drowning victim? Where is the nurse who notified the doctor that a patient was hemorrhaging? Where are the nurses who comfort the families of the dead and dying?
I read the survey that reported that the North Shore nurses don’t feel job satisfaction. Could it be that they feel unappreciated, unrespected, and unrecognized?
I’m gathering from the reports in the Cook County News-Herald that the nurses haven’t been asked directly for their input on the renovations.
There are nurses at the hospital 24/7. This is their workspace. They should be helping design it. They need to give direct input and not through a representative, but oneon one, face to face.
They save lives. Let’s help them. We can appreciate, respect, and recognize our Grand Marais nurses. They deserve it.
