In honor and celebration of Black History Month, the North Shore Music Association (NSMA) is proud to host jazz singer Charmin Michelle with Sam Miltich & Clearwater Hot Club, performing a tribute to American-born jazz singer and Harlem Renaissance luminary Adelaide Hall. The performance will be held on February 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
A major figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Adelaide Hall toured, recorded, and performed with artists including Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1901, Hall’s musical career began as a chorus member in the musical “Shuffle Along” in 1921. Soon she was headlining Harlem’s fabled Cotton Club and touring Europe. In 1927, she recorded the song “Creole Love Call” with Duke Ellington, and—using her voice as a pure jazz instrument with improvisational, wordless rhythms—she pioneered the “scat” vocal technique.
A charismatic chanteuse whose conversational style recalls the late Billie Holiday and other legendary ladies of jazz, Charmin Michelle is a savvy songstress who puts her imprint on a melody while respecting those who first inhabited it. Born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Minnesota, Charmin has performed at jazz festivals throughout Europe and the U.S. The Minneapolis Star Tribune writes, “Taste and understatement. Swing and savoir-faire. Grace and grooves. Intimacy and panache. Singer Charmin Michelle delivers all of the above and more.”
Sam Miltich is a jazz guitarist born and raised in northern Minnesota. He performs regularly in the Upper Midwest as a soloist and with his band Clearwater Hot Club. By age 18, Sam was touring with the Robin Nolan Trio in the U.S. and Europe. He later joined Hot Club of San Francisco, touring with them for two years before starting his band. In addition to gypsy swing and traditional jazz, Sam’s musical interests include Brazilian choro, French musette, Eastern European tamburitza, and other forms of traditional folk. Sam’s recent musical collaborators have included Peter Ostroushko, Dave Karr, and Dutch jazz violinist Tim Kliphuis.
Joining Clearwater Hot Club and Charmin Michelle for this performance is violinist Evan Price of Berkeley, CA. Price is a versatile musician best known for his work with Turtle Island Quartet and Hot Club of San Francisco. From 1997 to 2007, Price toured extensively in North America and Europe with Turtle Island Quartet and recorded five acclaimed CDs, two of which received Grammy awards.
