NSH Care Center gets a new name

What’s in a name?

According to William Shakespeare, “That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell just as sweet.”

And so it shall be for the re-naming of the North Shore Care Center.

After two years of discourse, dialogue, deliberation and plenty of debate, the newly rebuilt North Shore Health Care Center has finally gotten a new name. From now on it will be called North Shore Living.

Some of the names considered, contemplated, pondered, pontificated and mused over were posted on a wall in the care center on May 18, 2017.

The themes represented northern Minnesota. The list included: Lighthouse at North Shore Health; Lighthouse Port at North Shore Health; The Breakwater at North Shore Health; Wildwood at North Shore Health; Superior Living at North Shore Health; Northern Lights at North Shore Health; Tall Pines at North Shore Health; Wilderness Living at North Shore Health; Boundary Waters Living at NSH; Splashing Rock at NSH; Blue Shores Living at NSH; Spruce Meadow at NSH; and finally, but not the last name on the list by any means, We Care About You at North Shore Health.

The name change follows the residents naming the two new households “Woods” and “Waves.”

North Shore Health Director/CEO Kimber Wraalstad said Amy James, director of nursing at the care center, has been the leader of the naming project. For awhile the thought was to name the facility “Palisades at North Shore Health,” but, said Wraalstad when the name was unveiled to the residents they said, “Huh?” and that name was quickly scrapped and placed in the circular file of no return.

Which brought the discussion into more focus. “The question became,” said Kimber, “Where do the woods and waves meet? It was agreed that they meet on the North Shore and this is the place many people are living, so, North Shore Living seemed to be the answer.”

Kimber said a celebration is being planned this spring where the new name will be formally introduced, and although William Shakespeare won’t make the party, he would almost certainly approve of the new name.
