Parents, child care providers, educators and community members are invited to a free community forum at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
The topic will be “Brain Development in Young Children” featuring Molly Harney, Ph.D., an early childhood associate professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Harney will explain in simple to-understand language the link between children’s early experiences (birth to third grade) and lifelong brain development.
Harney earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree in early childhood special education from the University of Minnesota Duluth, and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and family studies with a concentration in parent education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She worked in birth to 5 setting for 18 years, and post-secondary education for 17 years. During the past 14 years she has taught at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where she is an associate professor in the Department of Education and the program coordinator for the early childhood studies program.
Harney’s research agenda is focused on maternal care, early brain development, emotional development, and attachment. She has created courses, lectures, presentations, and community programs designed to support both a scholarly and community-based understanding of the impact the early years have on lifelong health and well-being.
The 90-minute program is free of charge, and a light dinner will be provided. Call the Northland Foundation to register at (218) 723-4040.
