The Northwoods Volunteer Connection, a nonprofit organization based in Tofte, is hosting a Forest Volunteer Open House in celebration of National Volunteer Week. The event will take place on Monday, April 24 starting at 5 p.m. at Voyageur Brewing Company.
Volunteers play a significant role in caring for public lands in northeastern Minnesota. Local hiking, biking, ATV, snowmobile and ski trails make the region a destination for outdoor recreation; the work of forest volunteers helps keep these trails open for use.
During the Forest Volunteer Open House, local groups will have informational displays, and attendees will have the opportunity visit with representatives about their upcoming volunteer events.
“We have so many great volunteers working on our regional public land,” the Northwoods Volunteer Connection’s Executive Director, Laurel Wilson, said. “We want to celebrate those individuals and organizations, and also invite the community to learn more about the efforts of forest volunteers and how they can get involved. I’d like to encourage everyone to come out for a fun evening, have a snack with friends, enter to win door prizes and listen to our featured speaker.”
John Storkamp is the featured speaker. As a Superior Hiking Trail volunteer sawyer and race director for the Superior Spring and Fall Trail Running races held on the Superior Hiking Trail, John has a one-of-a-kind perspective to share. In this presentation, John shares his diverse experiences on the shore, in the forest and on the trail, his personal background, and his thoughts as a volunteer and volunteer coordinator.
