Fall is over. The color that cheered the hillsides has wiggled from the sky and now crunches under our feet. Days are short, colder, grey skies are the new norm. For some, this time of year is depressing. But a book by local artist Jan Rivard Attridge can brighten your winter days.
The book is called Northshore Flowers, Gardens & People Paintings, and it’s hard to look at without smiling.
“Each page is a riot of color,” says Vivian Johnson, PhD, Professor Emeritus, who is quoted on the back jacket of the book. It’s an apt description. The peonies and poppies pop off the page. The paintings of locals include the late Milt Powell and Byron Bradley and folks who have moved but impacted our lives like Steve Harsin, Elaine and Bob Sample. Other portraits include Harley Tofte, Marty Jackopich, Pat Zankman, Emma Bradley, and more. Featured also is the Grand Marais Garden Club and the gardens and buildings located behind the Cook County Community Center. There are other local topics and places painted on these pages as well.
This is a book of few words, and the pictures do most of the talking. And the conversation is engaging and joyful. As Suzabelle (Belle) Janicek, MFA, MA, notes, “Eye candy beyond words. Colors and textures are outstanding and seemingly there is a party of joy going on in this collection”
I couldn’t agree more. This book will take the grey away—at least for a while—from your long winter day.
