A team of young swimmers from the Cook County Community YMCA attended the YMCA State swim meet on February 8 and finished in 10th place out of 18 teams.
Held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center, the Northern Swim Team represented the county in fine fashion.
“I thought the kids all did really well,” said Head Swim Coach and YMCA Aquatics Director Cody White. “In a few years I hope we can have 30 kids out so we can have a team of our own. Right now we are partnering with the Y in Duluth, but it would be neat to be on our own. We have a great bunch of young swimmers coming up.”
Henry DeArruuda-Weaver swam in four events, placing 5th in the 13-to 14-year-old division of the 200-yard individual medley (IM); 11th in the 200-yard backstroke; 12th in the 14 and under 200-yard freestyle relay and 5th in the 14 and under 400-yard freestyle relay.
Tanner DeBoer finished 6th in the 13-14 year-old 200-yard IM; 13th in the 200-yard backstroke; 8th in the 13-14 year-old division of the 100- yard backstroke; and 4th in the 12 and under 400-yard freestyle relay.
Shaelyn Hingos placed 16th in the girls 10 and under 400-yard freestyle relay.
Ole Sorenson placed 3rd in the 13-14 year old 200-yard freestyle; 6th in the 14 and under 200-yard medley relay; 15th in the 13-14 year-old 100- yard freestyle; and 5th in the 14 and under 400 freestyle relay.
Tristan Surbaugh finished 12th in the 13-14 year-old division of the 100-yard backstroke, and 10th in the 10 and under division of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Martine Redshaw placed 14th in the girls 8 and under 200-yard freestyle relay.
Will Surbaugh placed 11th in the 13-14 year-old division of the 200- yard freestyle; 12th in the 14 and under 200-yard freestyle relay and 5th in the 14 and under 400-yard freestyle relay.
Hazel Kemp also participated, finishing 13th in the girls 12 and under 200-yard freestyle relay and 13th in the girls 11-12 year old division of the 100- yard freestyle.
The next big swim meet coming up is Regions which will also be held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. More than 100 teams from 11 states are expected to participate at the regional meet.
