North Shore Waste is growing its business. The company announced on April 8 through Facebook that it purchased Nelson Machine Products in Tofte.
“We will be expanding our Roll-off, resident, commercial trash services to Lutsen, Tofte, Schroeder, Finland and surrounding areas.
“We are thankful for the many years of hard work Rich and Kathy (Nelson) dedicated to servicing this area. We have big shoes to fill and plan to continue offering exceptional services to the residents of the North Shore,” wrote North Shore Waste co-owners Dustin Hansen and Barry Pederson.
The recent purchase fits with the business plan unveiled at a media event hosted by Pederson and Hansen last September 2022. Rena Rogers, spokesperson for North Shore Waste said, “The Cook County Solid Waste Improvement Program is a 5-year multi-phase program that “will dramatically improve the efficiency and environmental impact of Cook County’s waste processing facilities and operations. To accomplish this goal North Shore Waste plans to utilize solar energy and electric vehicles to power their work in the future – mitigating the impact of rising fuel costs on Cook County residents and businesses while reducing the environmental impact of current operations.”
Stage 1 is building a 24,000 square foot transfer station powered by solar panels. Hopes are to break ground on that building next summer.
The second stage involves reducing 20 percent of the areas solid waste by creating a commercial compost. Instead of hauling that solid waste to a Duluth landfill, that product will stay in the county and create black dirt, which is like gold in a county filled with rocks and thin topsoils.
The third phase is to transition NSW garbage hauling trucks to vehicles powered by electric vehicles that operate off of the power created by the solar panels on the transfer station.
